The Problem of the Driven Man

| October 29, 2021

I do not want to benefit from the misfortune of others. Unfortunately, some of our best clients are the widows of driven men, although lately we are seeing the misfortune of the driven woman. This is not progress. Typically, a person wants to take care of his or her family. They work long hours and eat bad food. They do not have time for the gym and sometimes kill the pain with alcohol and cigarettes. They do understand that in order to provide for a long life, earning and saving needs to begin early. Health gets put off.

Plans are made for the future. Trips are planned and the numbers are revised over and over. Then health fails. We gather together with the attorney at the bedside, getting the necessary documents signed and witnessed before it is too late. A giant void is left as the patriarch or matriarch that everybody depended upon is no longer there. Everyone is unprepared.

I wish this were not true, but it is. Being something of a driven man myself, I have tried to learn from my clients that setting aside time for the gym is not neglecting my obligations. Eating well and avoiding excess is actually fulfilling my obligations. Vacations need to be taken today and not left for someday, even if it is just buying a tent at Walmart and going camping. My own experience is that those memories rank among the best I have. Covid did make everything much harder, though.

We are here to help you. Longevity is a fact of modern life and is a major cause of the problems with Social Security. We know that we cannot control fate, but most of us can influence our health, something that is essential if we want to live great lives together with those whom we love.
